怪物 (Guài Wù)
The result? Drawing became un-fun. ☹️
From following drawing exercises online to picking up new tools like acrylic paints, charcoal pencils, and watercolour, there was a lot I could do, but nothing was getting done. I wanted to give up...
Felix noticed my pessimism. "Do you remember those comic strips you used to draw?"
During the early years of the studio, I’d sketch snippets of real life, funny moments, and random daydreams. They weren’t really Anonymous’ style, so I never shared them. I’d just slide them over to Felix’s desk like kids in class cheating on a test 🤣.
Over time, that habit faded, overtaken by client work, endless quotations, constant meetings, and the general humdrum of adulting.
Thinking back, those little comics were so much fun to draw.
While deciding on a name, I described these little characters as 怪物 (guài wù), the Chinese word for “monster” or “strange creature.” Then it clicked. A direct translation of the characters was odd objects.
Oddjects. Perfect~
No fancy drawing tools or an idyllic art studio. Just an iPad and a few overweight cats judging me because I turn the iPad around as I draw instead of rotating the canvas in the app...
Now, I’m about 70% into my goal of 365 Oddjects. (Follow my progress here!)
Because an Oddject a day keeps the pessimist at bay~
